Malik was born in San Francisco on November 22, 1972. He has one younger brother. Malik has been bodybuilding for three years, but has achieved an impressive physique that is already a serious challenge to other contestants. He lives in Oakland, where he works as a steward at a large hotel chain. He wants to take his bodybuilding all the way into a career.

For hobbies other than bodybuilding, he enjoys making things such as clocks, picture frames, and jewelry boxes. He has a strong creative bent. He enjoys music, including Erika Badu and Anita Baker. He especially likes Gospel. He enjoys lyrics, especially strong positive ones, and he comments that the lyrics of the songs of the '60s and '70s are not outdated and still relate to what is happening today.

His favorite food is crab. He is especially fond of all types of seafood. After a contest, his favorite pigout food is barbecue.

His favorite movies are When We Were Kings and Something About Mary.
